In my 'postage stamp' size garden in Tenerife I have a Lime tree. It overhangs my patio so when we need fresh limes for cooking or for drinks we literally reach out and get them.

My wife took this shot of me up in my tree harvesting some limes the other night. I was getting a few to marinate chicken breasts for a barbecue.

I marinate chicken breasts overnight in Lime juice (you can substitute lime with lemon but it's not just as tasty), honey, ginger and a drop of Tequila. Then barbecue the chicken, it is superb and has an exotic flavour. The honey caramelises on the outside of the chicken - wonderful.

You don't get too many Lime trees in Yorkshire, so it's a lovely aspect of life in Tenerife.

We have mentioned before that Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, is a city well worth visiting.

It has one of the deepest  harbours in 'Europe' and is a very busy seaport. Many cruise liners visit the island and dock here for a day or two prior to crossing the Atlantic to the Caribean, the States or South America. Some cruises of course sail round the Islands stopping also in Morrocco and Madeira

The city has a magnificent backdrop and is right at the foot of the Mercedes Mountains. Santa Cruz has a very Colonial feel with many streetside bars and cafes. Places of interest are the Military Museum, the Guanche Museum (the Guanche's were the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands) and the Planetarium.

Having a quick look around the docks as I love to do, I spotted a little head peeping at me from a scupper on a UK registered ship

Zooming in a little closer revealed a handsome crewmember who was doing his duty and guarding the vessel!

What a good boy! Fittingly he is an English Bull Terrier and enjoyed the sound of an English (Yorkshire) voice.

Santa Cruz is only about three quarters of an hour from Club Olympus if you have a hire car. A very regular bus service leaves every half hour from the bus station adjacent to Club Olympus, obviously that takes a little longer but is approximately an hour straight up the TF-1 motorway.

We always try to encourage Club Olympus owners and guests to see more of our delightful island, as indeed most of you do without any prompting. There is much more to Tenerife than some realise. The sheer diversity represented in a fairly small island is terrific and well worth seeing.

In the far distance of this shot you can just see the beautiful Auditorium which is a central feature of Santa Cruz. The quayside shown here is where the cruise ships are normally moored so it's quite rare to get a clear shot here.

If you get a chance and fancy a 'bit of culture', do have a look at Santa Cruz.

Cheers and all the best

Over the years, most of the Showaddywaddy band members have enjoyed hospitality at Club Olympus but none as often as our mate Geoff Betts.

Under his stage name of 'Al James', Geoff was a founder member, bass player and vocalist with one of the worlds best loved showbands. Here is Geoff (centre)  with Hedley and Tony Rhodes of Club Olympus.

Geoff retired from the band at the end of last year after decades of providing great entertainment for all ages.

Here below is a picture of Geoff in 'band uniform' with lead singer Dave Bartram (taken from the official Showaddywaddy website)

Showaddywaddy were formed in 1973, their very first single "Hey Rock n Roll" written by themselves was a number 2 hit in the UK. After that they had 22 hits, mostly with cover songs such as "Three steps to Heaven" (Eddie Cochran), Buddy Holly's "Heartbeat", "Under the Moon of Love" (Curtis Lee) which went to number 1 in the UK and "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" also by Curtis Lee.

They had ten, top ten singles and spent 209 weeks in the UK charts in total.

It was a pleasure to have Geoff down at the resort again.

The capital of Tenerife is Santa Cruz and many of you will already have visited this fascinating City. It is one of the largest deepwater ports in the world and is an extraordinarily busy harbour. Not only is Tenerife a favourite location for most of the big cruise ships but is the stopping off point for most ships going across the Atlantic.

Here above is the famous P & O Cruise ship the Aurora moored in Santa Cruz Harbour . But just to give you an idea of the size of the Port, here below are another 2 cruise liners moored next to the Aurora!

And this is only one section of the enormous Port here in Santa Cruz.

Ferries operate to all of the Canary Islands from here and because Santa Cruz has it's own oil refinery it is a busy place for Tankers. Many ships also use the port for 'bunkering' (filling up with fuel oil) as they travel the oceans of the world.

Here below is a shot of the old and the new.

This is the old, original, steam powered ferry that used to go to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, moored opposite the Aurora. It used to take eight hours on the steamer to get to our neighbouring island. Now, on the fast Catamarans it takes an hour and a half!

If you come on a visit to Santa Cruz (which is about three quarters of an hour drive from Club Olympus) do take time to visit the historic and very busy port area. The shopping in Santa Cruz is excellent and it has a really old colonial feel about it. There are fabulous buildings and delightful pavement cafes, museums, historic sites and of course, terrific restaurants.

For me though, I love being around ships and the inevitable hustle and bustle of a busy port.

The City of Santa Cruz is certainly worth spending a day in when you next visit Club Olympus. It is very easy to get to with half hourly bus services from virtually outside Club Olympus right into the city centre. By car, the TF-1 motorway delivers you right into the heart of the action and there loads of handy carparks. Once the car is parked, you can wander for hours! On Sundays there is an enormous 'African Market' which is an event in itself.

If you need any further information ask any member of the team down at Club Olympus!

Timeshare Owner Bob Thompson sent in this spectacular sunset taken from Club Olympus recently.

Again looking out to Gomera from Club Olympus, you can see the hotel Jardin Tropical silhouetted in the foreground.

Great shot Bob, thank you for sharing that with us!
